      one of my favourites is Louis Pasteur, who was one of the first people to prove that some diseases are caused by germs in the air and don’t just spring up out of nowhere. everything he did was about trying to solve particular problems: he stopped wine and milk going off, and then worked with farmers to help them out, and then found a cure for a disease called rabies that was a big problem in the 1900s. i like that all of his work was useful, not just finding stuff out for the sake of it. it would have been really exciting to work with him at the time.
